Copyright music and the Internet

There are now a growing number of cases in USA where wedding videographers are being sued for using commercial music on their website clips - despite having the licence required to produce the video to DVD using the exact same music.

The situation has now become so complex and the powers that be becoming so inconsistent in what they will or will not allow, that we can no longer risk showing the original video clips on line. They will now be replaced, when time allows, using copyright free music. This is far from ideal but at least it allows us to show the clips legally.
This does not change anything with regard to music on your wedding DVD, only to the use of the same music on the web.

Apologies for the inconvenience.

Charlie and Ling didn't quite manage to pick the driest day of the year but that did't dampen the celebrations. It was fingers and toes crossed at the Grange Hotel, Grange over Sands on the morning of Michelle and Daniel's wedding day - would the rain stop as the weatherman had promised? Well, just for once he got it right!! Michelle was bridesmaid at Kerry and Adrian's wedding earlier in the year at the Swan Hotel so it was nice to see some familiar faces - though I didn't expect to see two other couples there whose weddings I'd also filmed! Always good to work with photographer Steve Hillman who I manage to catch up with at least once a year.

Crosthwaite Church sits right next to the Punch Bowl in this tiny South Lakes village surrounded by green fields. Will and Victoria had a beautiful day for their wedding with friends and family enjoying the sunshine in a very relaxed atmosphere. Bryan Jones covered all the photos - I must get a lesson from Bryan in how to pin a buttonhole, too fast to see how he does it. The bride did away with the need for a car to church, a quick walk down the hill saw to that and a gentle stroll back again for the drinks reception and meal afterward

Adam's family are no strangers to this beautiful valley in the Lake District as they've spent several holidays over the years in Seathwaite. We had some fun on the photoshoot with Carol Kershaw and finished the day off with a cruise on Derwent Water in perfect conditions.

The beautiful Holbeck Ghyll Hotel by Windermere was the setting for Kirsten and Michael's big day at the beginning of August. Some dark clouds eventually gave way to glorious sunlight making for a perfect day in a perfect location.

The Lakeside Hotel on the shores of Windermere is one of those venues I rarely get a chance to film at. Clare and Daniel married there in July this year at what turned out to be one of the most emotional days I can remember ( even the cake - no, stop it)

Castle Green Hotel, Kendal for John and Majlinda

Well, it just had to happen, sooner or later some poor souls were going to get a proper Lake District day for their wedding! John and Majlinda married at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal back in July. Friends and family came from far and near to help celebrate their day, from Albania, Italy and even Barrow in Furness. The day started out a little on the damp side but it cleared enough to have the family photos outside so it was decided to take the chance and go for a lakeside photo shoot at Bowness on Windermere. Big mistake!! My thanks to Berghause for the Gortex-pro jacket which I thankfully had the foresight to take with me. Well done to all for taking it in such good spirit :)

The end of June and a blustery but dry day at at The Inn on the Lake, Glenridding for Suzanne and Andrew. Andrew's dad did the honours as best man which made a change from the norm, especially when it came to the speeches!!

Anna and Kevin married at Crook Church in slightly better weather than the last time I filmed there, back in December (have a look at 'Low Wood Hotel Christmas Wedding)

Crook Church was spectacularly decked out by Margaret Mason and the bridal party arrived in style in those wonderful Cars of Distinction. After a beautiful service with the Amabile Choir it was back to Crook Foot for an excellent marquee reception by Karen Rhodes Catering.

Following a church service at Jesus Church Troutbeck, Kendall and James celebrated at Cragwood Country House. It was a forgone conclusion that things would run to plan - it is, after all, Kendall's job, even the one small shower of the day held back until the evening.

A 'changeable' day as they say in the Lake District but it eventually came good and the evening cruise on the lake ended in glorious sun shine.

A first for me at the Dale Lodge Hotel, Grasmere. Working alongside Mark Carr of IE Photography - hadn't seen him since our Armathwaite Hall wedding in 2009 so a pleasure, once again, to work with someone with a great sense of humour and good banter.
Dale Lodge is a haven of peace in such a busy Lake District town and everything ran smoothly without fuss or fluster - always a good sign.
John and Tina had a beautiful day in the sunshine and the forecast for rain held off until well into the night, even managed to squeeze in a quick run down to the lakeside for a photo session.

Cartmel Priory and Low Wood for Aimee and Stuart

Back at the end of November, the first real snow of the winter fell and everyone slithered and slipped their way through Cartmel village to see the wedding of Aimee and Stuart at Cartmel Priory.
Despite a bitterly cold wind blowing off the fells and down Windermere, they all braved the freezing temperatures for one of the most scenic photo shoots of the season at the Low Wood Bay hotel.
I've said it before, when it's your Big Day you just have to do it - it's too late come tomorrow.

Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

I know we're in the middle of a recession but this is a plea from the heart.
I really enjoy photography, I've a lovely camera and a good selection of nice lenses to cover most situations, spare batteries and cards and few other bits and pieces - I can even take a pretty good picture though I say so myself, BUT, I don't even begin to pretend I can photograph a wedding. I'm not a wedding photographer, I don't have the skill or the eye to photograph people, I can film them 'til the cows come home but that's a different business altogether.

As in every recession or dip there is a flood of people who think any job is a doddle and there's a chance to make a fast buck by undercutting everyone, at the moment it seems that any silly fool can be a wedding photographer.
Please don't risk wasting the one chance you have of a decent album of your day. Like everything else in life, you get what you pay for and I'm afraid that the camera from Currys or Comet doesn't have 'Experience Included' in the box.

Having now exhibited at three very well attended fairs this Spring, the thing that stood out was the number of couples who were going for an April wedding next year - have you booked your venue, photographer, car, cake etc etc?

St Peter's, Heysham and the Netherwood Hotel

Judith and Jonathan picked a freezing cold December day to marry at St Peter's Church in Heysham before slip sliding over to the Netherwood Hotel at Grange over Sands for the reception.
Jonathan made a fine job of clearing the path to the church before the guests arrived and Judith made it near enough on time, despite the official cars being unable to get through the snow and ice. They even managed to brave the cold for some fab photos outside by my old friend, Paul Conrad.

It's that time of year again!! We've already been to the Low Wood fair and next up is the Castle Green on 20th Feb, but the following two weekends see us back up in the Lake District.
Sunday 27th February is the very popular and well attended Inn on the Lake fair at Glenridding, Ullswater. We've exhibited here for the past two or three years now and it's always been a great success for visitors and exhibitors alike.
Sunday 6th March is a day by another lake, this time it's Windermere. Storrs Hall is one of the most impressive venues on the shores of Windermere so come along and talk to us about your wedding DVD.

Low Wood Hotel Christmas wedding

Crook Church and the Low Wood Hotel on a cold, damp day between Christmas and New Year. Heavy snow the previous day did make us all wonder if...... but everyone put in a tremendous effort and it all came together in the end.
Joanne and Matthew (or anyone else for that matter)couldn't get to the rehearsal the night before so it was very much a case of winging it on the day.
A first chance to work alongside photographer Ian Wood, nice easy style and more than happy to brave the weather to get those once in a lifetime shots.
The evening kicked of with a chance to win loads of 'money' on the Roulette Wheel and Black Jack table and then went into full swing with DJ Aldini(nice light show)

Cathy and Ben. St Martin's and Fell Foot

Back in September (when the weather was a little warmer) Cathy and Ben tied the knot at the beautiful St Martin's church in Bowness. Lots of tourists around, cameras at the ready for the arrival of the bride - always makes it feel like a Hollywood red carpet event as you jostle for position to get the shot.
After the service the guests sailed down the lake to the reception at Fell Foot while the bride and groom got there a little faster on a slightly speedier 'boat'.
Good time had by all, fireworks and a great live band to finish the night.

It was a bit of a damp start to Emma and Scott's wedding day at the end of August but that didn't bother anyone, plenty of brollies and a crowd of happy Geordies more than helped the day along. There was almost a patch of blue sky by the time they came out of church and although it didn't improve much on that, it was fine enough to enjoy a cruise on the lake after a great reception at the Low Wood Hotel.

Merewood Hotel Wedding

When dance instructor Anna and musician Pablo tied the knot you might have suspected their would be something a little out of the ordinary with the wedding day. A brass ensemble for the hymns, solo male voice during the signing of the register, a fifteen piece Big Band to die for in the evening and a first dance that even caught Pablo off guard.
The Merewood Country House excelled as always and it was a real privilege for me to work with George Coupe on his final job before he retired from wedding photography, though he's still producing exhibition work. Always a pleasure to work with Mrs Coupe too (Helen) though I only found out at Anna and Pablo's wedding that they had just become Mr and Mrs Coupe recently - after twenty years!!! Well done

Nunsmere Hall wedding

For some strange reason it's rare that I get the chance to film a wedding in my own town! However, Lisa and Ryan pulled out all the stops for their sunshine filled day back in July. Limos, Horse and Carriage, lots of bridesmaids, ushers and pageboys made for a truly Big Day.
Service at the beautiful Parish Church followed by a reception and dance at the Castle Green Hotel. Worked with husband and wife photographers David and Pat from the Granary Studio who I hadn't seen since last year but was about to work with again, just a couple of weeks later.

Grasmere Church and Langdale Chase Hotel

I suppose I could look at it two ways, one, it's a beautiful thought that the Lake District is such a wonderful place couples come from the Caribbean to get married here, or, two, a bit miffed that I don't get to go to the Caribbean to film weddings. Oh well, that's life.
Rachel and Gavin brought a little bit of colour and sunshine with them when they tied the knot at Our Lady of the Wayside church in Grasmere and after at the Langdale Chase Hotel.
Good to work with photographer Steven Taylor again (and Josh) - have a look at his blog, he gets asked abroad!! He's also reached the finals of the 'Kodak Photographer of the Year'
I also had a chance to chat with Stu Rogers. I filmed Stu and Angela's wedding a few years ago and Stu also designed my website. He's returned to his old love of music and was running the evening event.

Lynsey and Chris: St Martins and The Merewood Hotel

Yet another glorious day, sunshine , sunshine, sunshine (is this really the Lake District?)
Lynsey and Chris braved the elements to tie the knot at St Martins church, Bowness then went off to pose for the photographer, leaving their poor guests to lick on cones of Lakeland ice-cream while cruising on the lake - it's a hard life.
Then it was back to the wonderful Merewood Country House for the reception, a wedding cake to behold and a special treat before the first dance.

Another sunny day! A very special day in so many ways. I love filming at St Martins, such a beautiful church and there's always a real buzz with all the tourists crowding round to see the bride arrive!!

Sarah and Tony braved the damp and cold for their day at Storrs Hall . I'm writing this in the middle of May and the weather is only now beginning to pick up.
Back in April it was only a slight improvement from Carly and Jordans day (see previous posting) The snow might have gone but it certainly wasn't warm!! However, Sarah and Tony had a great time including a 'fresh' cruise on the lake.

The snow has returned in the passed couple of days but this was from a wedding in January.
Carly and Jordon braved the bitter cold and had a fabulous day in Glenridding though it was a case of 'spot the bride' when they all went outside - white dress and white snow. Some of the guests turned up a little late after taking the short cut over Kirkstone Pass, for some reason they didn't see the 'Road Closed' sign (it was probably buried under the snow)

It all worked out 'fine' in the end with some great shots down by the lake and a good fun night for all at the Ramblers Bar to round things off. Emma and Gavin just went with the flow and had a brilliant day.

this should have been titled 'how to confuse your cameraman!!'
Aimee married Michael in August, Aimee's sister, Adele, also married Michael (a different Michael) in 2007 and I filmed her wedding too (also at St Mary's and Chequers) Since Adam had asked Michael (that's Aimee's Michael not Adele's) to be an Usher at his wedding last year (guess who filmed that one) it seemed only right that Adam should be an Usher at Michael's. Rebecca (I haven't mentioned her up to now) was also a bridesmaid at Aimee's wedding which would have been OK except that the day after I filmed her (Rebecca's) wedding (also at St Mary's) I started to try and edit Aimee's wedding DVD.
There are several other people on this clip who I've yet to film - please just give me a call :)

I've got to admit that this is not the driest place to live in the world, beautiful yes, but not always dry and sunny. When it's your Big Day and the day isn't all it could be weather wise then take a leaf out of Michelle and Nathan's book and just say 'hang it, let's go for it anyway'. Having your reception at the Langdale Chase does help!
Some of the best photo opportunities are had not on bright sunny days but when it's dull and even worse......

It seems I have lost a month somewhere along the way! Squeezed in what might be the last of my regular walks in the fells as the 2009 wedding season kicks into full swing.
Gary and Angela married at St Johns church Heysham and then went onto the reception at the Midland Hotel, Morecambe - beautifully restored art deco classic on the sea front.
The highlight sequence from the finished edit gives you a good idea of just how much you can fit into your big day - including Irish dancers and 'Meatloaf' tribute!!

Tomorrow sees my first wedding at the refurbished Midland Hotel in Morecambe - beautifully restored Art Deco building on the sea front. The weather is set to be reasonable so here's hoping! I'll let you know how it goes.

40th Anniversary Gift

I was handed a carrier bag full of goodies the other day and it’s to be the basis of my latest project.
The bag contained a photo album, greetings cards and telegrams, press cuttings and a few precious minutes of old super eight film that had been transferred to video. Later this year one happy couple (whose names I have withheld as this is supposed to be a surprise) will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and the bag full of goodies is to be transformed into a DVD as a gift from one to the other.
So, there you go, don’t throw anything away and somewhere in the distant future you can have all your wedding day memories transferred onto what ever it is they’ll be watching in forty years from now (it sure won’t be DVD!! )

The one great thing about doing this job is the number of thank you letters you get. This one arrived this morning and says everything that needs to be said about making the decision to have your wedding filmed.

You’ve captured the day beautifully with lovely little touches like the two swans on the lake and the reflection of us in the glass door, having our photos taken.

Now that the Wedding Season has calmed down a bit!!!
I've had some time, at long last, to get out of my 'office' and back up the fells. These are just a few of the many photos I've taken over the past couple of months, hope they let you see a little of what the Lake District is all about.

Lake District Panto then off to Frankfurt

No weddings last weekend but an interesting drive instead. Just to make you 'gamers' green with envy, I took my youngest son, together with his worldly belongings, to start his first 'proper' job - as an animator with Frankfurt based games giants Crytek. He still can't believe he's really there!!

Lake District weather has been a bit hit and miss - mainly 'miss' as far as the heavy snow is concerned, plenty on the fell tops but not much below. It wasn't enough to stop the Lakes Players annual panto at Troutbeck Bridge Lakes School and this year I was given the chance to film it for the cast - brilliant fun, great performance and all happy with the DVD.

2008 Season

Well, not the driest of years but hey, what the heck, it’s the Lake District! Spring was nice, I remember Spring – warm, dry, sunny, full of promise, just like ’07 – should have learned. The weather broke around June and never settled down again. Having said that, I only had three really wet weddings but oh, were they wet!! Congratulations to Greg and Natalie, Neil and Malinda and to Elspeth and Johann for saying ‘stuff it’ and having a fabulous day. Elspeth and Johann’s wedding produced some of the best shots of the year down by the lake in the pouring rains of December, just goes to show that you don’t need sunshine for great memories.

It’s also been a good year for meeting new photographers. I have the greatest of respect for photographers – not something you’ll hear many video guys say!! I can take a mean landscape photo, make no mistake, but I wouldn’t do their job for the life of me. No way can I photograph people, let alone herd them round and organise groups without realising it’s happening. Take great care choosing your photographer, unlike me (hiding in the background most of the time) they can make, or break, your entire wedding day.
I’m not going to embrace those who are on my list of ‘faves’ but you know who you are.

So, here we are, the Safe Harbour Blog! Life and Work in the Lake District!

Most people go a bit green with envy when they find out you live up here, but what's it really like? Same as everywhere else when you get used to it - up in the morning, lakes and mountains, up the next morning, same lakes and mountains and so on and so on. Then someone goes and gives something a little twist of the light and a little tweak in the weather and lo and behold, a whole new world to look at. So what's it really like - a bit special, that's what.
Hopefully, over the next few months / years I can give you a little taste of what life is like living and working in such a beautiful area
